Question

What is the best way to clean a newly refinished hardwood floor? The floor has been top-coated with a polyurethane finish. It has now been curing for at least two weeks and is ready for some light cleaning.

Answer

Prevention is critical to proper cleaning and care. Keep as much dry soil, grit, and liquids as possible off the floor with entry matting and regular dust or dry mopping with a micro fiber flat mop is needed. When moist cleaning is needed, use a slightly damp micro fiber flat mop. Never use any more water/moisture than is absolutely needed. If it's a small home area, use one of the commercial spray cleaners from the hardware store that's made for wood or laminate flooring. Don't spray the floor; spray the cleaner on the mop head. If it's a commercial location, use a commercial neutral detergent mixed according to the instructions on the bottle and wring the mop head as dry as possible before putting it on the floor. Again keeping dry soil off the floor and removing it frequently are key to preventing scratches and wear, which make refinishing necessary.
