Question

I currently have a Floor Team. I am considering changing their hours of operations from 4:00am - 12:30pm to 9:30pm - 6:00am. What elements would you suggest I need in my proposal to make a convincing argument? For instance , production will increase, because non-interruptions, etc.

Answer

Your best arguments for making an adjustment will come from the response of your people to the proposal and the advantages you gain in the time change. Any move from business hours to time when the floors are vacant will prove advantageous.
Doing floor work during normal business hours leads to interruptions, difficulties shutting down various areas, and often people walking over newly finished floors. Even having floors wet from mopping during traffic periods exposes the crew to being responsible for slip and fall incidents.
While people seldom favor overnight shifts to day time work, it is often necessary to allow proper drying times for refinishing tile and drying rinsed carpet. Even so, I wonder if production will increase when such a long night shift is installed?
Is there any reason the shift cannot be started a bit earlier, 7 PM for example? Then, there would be several hours after a final finish coat was applied before the foot traffic started up and longer drying times for carpet.
